Bird watching in Kaziranga Asaam

With more than 10,000 species of avifauna living around the world, Birdwatching activity has become a very popular tourism activity across the world. Birds have always fascinated human fraternity from a very long time. Since ancient civilization it has been believed that some magical power is being attached to these creatures and hence they are worshipped and revered as Gods. Watching and studying birds in their natural habitat is a best way of understanding nature and its habitat.
The North Indian state of Assam is just like a heaven for birdwatchers. The fact behind this is almost 35 per cent of the state has forest cover accounting to 26,000 square kilometer of dense forest area with several big and small water bodies makes it perfect destination for birdwatchers especially during winter season. Many migratory birds come to Assam from across the world and make their home here in winter season. Collectively it is said that Assam is one the world’s finest birding destinations in India.
At the Kaziranga National Park near about 500 avifauna species have been recorded. The forest of Kaziranga is an abode of all the green pigeon species found in the Indian subcontinent. Great white and elusive Dalmatian Pelican, the Black Necked Crane as well as the Great and Oriental Pied Hornbills found here. It is generally said that if Kaziranga National Park was not known for one horned rhino and royal Bengal tiger then it would surely have been known as one of the world’s finest bird watching destinations.
Some of the bird species found at the Kaziranga National Park include Grey Peacock Pheasant, Kalij Pheasant, Fulvous Whistling-duck, Lesser Whistling-Duck, Greater White fronted Goose, Bar-Headed Goose, Ruddy Shelduck, Spot-Billed Duck, Cotton Pygmy Goose, Gadwall Anas, Northern Sholver, Common Teal Anas Crecca, Red Crested Pochard and many more to list.
